York City Futsal will be hoping a first victory in nine games at the weekend proves to be one of their most significant results of the season.

The Minstermen crucially took maximum points as they accounted for bottom club London Genesis 3-1 at the University of East London on Sunday evening.

Genesis were actually the last team York defeated when surging to a resounding 5-0 home triumph in November.

But with Tom Blackburn (2) and Jamie Bettson both on target in the capital, the visitors moved six points clear of the relegation zone while also maintaining the pressure on Oxford City Lions and Manchester, who are directly above them in the table.

It was a crucial weekend victory in the capital for Junior Roberti’s charges

Both Tranmere Rovers and Loughborough had already lost to Manchester and Birmingham respectively in earlier kick-offs.

Notably, City have played fewer games than any of their main relegation rivals, and five of their eight remaining fixtures are at home, while also including a couple of intriguing clashes with Tranmere.

Title-chasing Reading Escolla and London Helvecia, plus Oxford and Cambridge United, are still to visit the YorkSport Arena, with also additional scheduled away trips to both London Helvecia and London City.

However, Junior Roberti’s side next welcome Sheffield in the FA Futsal Cup on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 4.15pm).
