A team largely comprising of York City’s expected reserves went down 2-1 to Harrogate Town on the artificial 3G pitch at the CNG Stadium.

Striker Reece Thompson earned them a twenty-first minute lead swiftly cancelled out by Jordan Robertson before one-time Albanian Under-21 international Andy Thanoj curled in a second-half winner.

The visitors included only a couple of players involved in their narrow defeat to Doncaster Rovers just twenty-four hours earlier, while their novice bench displayed new young professionals Charlie Wardle and Nick Kennedy, plus Academy players Joe Wilton, Kyle Trainter, Aaron Brettle, Sam Fielding and Brad Freer.

An uneventful start witnessed Louie Swain receiving an early caution for a foul on Kaine Felix before the visitors surged in front midway through the opening half, Thompson exchanging passes with Richard Brodie and rifling low past Peter Crook.

That advantage lasted a mere four minutes though, when former City trialist Dominic Knowles crossed from the right and unmarked recent signing Robertson headed his sixth goal of pre-season into the far corner.

Knowles shot narrowly wide soon after before Thompson laid off a Felix cross at the other end and Brodie hoisted over. Luke Shiels then became the second home player booked for his challenge on Thompson – and was soon joined by ex-York midfielder Tom Platt for fouling Franklyn Clarke.

Andy Gascoigne was next to try his luck following Platt helping on Lloyd Kerry’s delivery while Brodie was cautioned for persistent misconduct.

Having appeared to sustain a knock, Jack Higgins and then Brodie were both replaced either side of the break as the visitors turned towards their very young bench, although it was Thompson soon having an effort ruled out before Gascogine curled a reply wide.

The hosts went close again as former Grimsby Town midfielder Thanoj despatched a 28-yard free-kick against the angle of post and crossbar before Platt headed over Lewis Turner’s cross.

But Thanoj wasn’t about to be denied as he swept another free-kick from closer distance beyond newly-acquired goalkeeper Luke Simpson with just over an hour played.

Substitute Joe Leesley’s cross was next knocked back by Shiels and almost turned in by Gascoigne, while fellow replacement Chib Chilaka was denied late on by Simpson, who also thwarted Shiels’ header following another Leesley delivery.
