Former York City goalkeeper Eddie Blackburn had died at the age of 61, it has been announced.

The Houghton-le-Spring-born shot-stopper became manager Barry Lyons’ first signing for York when joining in a £6,000 deal from Hull City in May 1980.

Blackburn went on to be named as their ‘Clubman of the Year’ in 1980-81 as the Minstermen finished bottom of the entire Football League.

However, he was to lose his place following the arrival of the experienced Roger Jones at the start of the 1982-83 season and after making 87 appearances.

He then played more than 150 games for Hartlepool United having signed permanently in January 1983, before finishing his career in Sweden on loan to Halmstads BK.
