York City’s recent decline was maintained as Joss Labadie scored a goal in each half to earn Dagenham & Redbridge a 2-0 victory at Victoria Road.
Labadie opened his account ten minutes before the interval and then headed his second from Ashley Chambers’ 62nd minute free-kick.
Manager Nigel Worthington made a single-change with Ryan Jarvis replacing Lindon Meikle. Their opponents included ex-York duo Chambers and Andre Boucaud in their starting line-up.
The Minstermen were the side pressing early with Michael Coulson turning and shooting wide from a throw-in and Jake Hyde heading a Luke Summerfield corner wide.
Striker Wes Fletcher then laid-off neatly for Coulson to hoist another opportunity over, while Marvin McCoy’s 30-yard effort was straight at goalkeeper Mark Cousins.
His opposite number Michael Ingham had seen absolutely no action and comfortably witnessed Chambers sending a free-kick over after a foul on the edge of the area.
But moments later ex-City forward Chambers broke down the left and allowed Labadie to finish into the corner from fifteen-yards for the opening goal.
The visitors were claiming a penalty following a surging break by skipper Russell Penn, although it was Labadie having another attempt blocked by McCoy before slicing a Chambers corner onto the roof of the net.
Recalled forward Jarvis delivered a great cross on the stroke of the interval but neither Fletcher nor Hyde could take advantage.
Coulson blazed an early free-kick over shortly after the restart and Keith Lowe covered the threat of veteran Jamie Cureton at the opposite end.
Lowe soon collected the first caution of the game for his challenge on Boucaud as his side began to force a number of corners. Dave Winfield headed a great opportunity wide from one of Summerfield’s deliveries.
But a free-kick awarded on the edge of the area for handball by Jarvis after defensive hesitation was whipped in by Chambers for Labadie to head his second.
York brought on Meikle for Hyde and his cross was soon dragged across goal by Jarvis. Summerfield was similarly replaced by Tom Platt.
Former City midfielder Boucaud was narrowly wide from distance while Coulson again missed the target in reply before McCoy whipped another great delivery finding no-takers.
Fletcher could then only locate Cousins on the turn and Winfield had another header from a free-kick before Coulson’s shot was deflected over. Lowe nodded Jarvis’ resultant corner directly towards the keeper and Meikle was much too high following a strong run.
But the visitors never really threatened a recovery despite Jarvis having a late effort blocked and now find themselves just three points off the bottom of the table following a third defeat in four games.
