York City’s twice Wembley hero Matty Blair struck a second-half winner as his former club went down 2-1 to Doncaster Rovers in their latest friendly at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen slipped into arrears when Tommy Rowe opened the scoring midway through the opening half, but Scott Fenwick’s fourth goal of the pre-season campaign soon levelled.

However, summer arrival Blair later produced a quality finish in front of the watching Sir Alex Ferguson – whose son Darren is currently in charge of the recently relegated South Yorkshire club.

Andy Williams forced a routine save for home keeper Scott Flinders during the opening exchanges while opposite number Ross Etheridge was called upon by advanced wing-back Shaun Rooney.

However, Rovers were to move in front when midfielder Clovis Kamjdo was dispossessed and John Marquis combined with last season’s top scorer Williams for Rowe to find the back of the net

Aidan Connolly soon produced another stop from Etheridge before an equaliser arrived when the little Scot’s free-kick was converted at close-range by Fenwick after the keeper had spilled.

Defender Andy Butler had a reply deflected behind and also headed a Jamie Coppinger free-kick over at the far post, while Alex Whittle lashed high at the opposite end.

Marquis directed a Rowe cross at Flinders following the break and Butler was again wide from Coppinger’s deep corner. Jack Higgins soon replied likewise from Yan Klukowski’s delivery after a misplaced back-pass.

Rovers forward Marquis then received a caution following a confrontation with Josh Robinson – but the visitors were back ahead midway through the second period when Blair crashed into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Connolly dragged wide for the hosts and substitute Daniel Nti drew a low save at his near post from Etheridge, whose York counterpart Flinders brilliantly denied Williams before Connolly shot tamely at the former Accrington Stanley keeper late on.
