Former York ace recalls famous victories

Former York City midfielder Graeme Murty has been recalling his Bootham Crescent days while preparing for Glasgow Rangers’ Scottish Cup fourth round tie with Highland League minnows Fraserburgh.

Appointed as Rangers chief until the end of the season just prior to Christmas, Murty was a crucial member of the York side that famously shocked both Manchester United and Everton in the League Cup back in the nineties.

And he is determined that such a fate won’t beset the Glasgow giants when taking on their non-league opponents this weekend.

“I knocked out Everton and Man U in successive years when I played for York,” Murty told the Scottish Herald. “I love taking big clubs to my stadium and turning them over.”

The Minstermen absolutely stunned the football world by incredibly winning 3-0 at Old Trafford in the first-leg and then holding out for an aggregate 4-3 victory in the return.

“They were really good,” Murty added. “Cantona, Cole, Giggs, all that lot played. No matter who you play against, when you go to Old Trafford you know you are up against it. But we were really, really good.

“We were League Two, they were Premier League. It is one of the highlights of my career.”
