Former York City midfielder Jonathan Smith has been given a free transfer by League Two club Stevenage.

The 31-year-old made a total of 58 appearances and scored five goals during a couple of spells with the Minstermen, either side of winning the League Two title at Swindon Town in 2012.

He also includes Luton Town and Forest Green Rovers amongst his former clubs.

Preston-born Smith is actually under contract with Boro for next season, but along with Kevin Lokko, Johnny Goddard and Joe Martin, has been told he can leave.

Meanwhile, Jack King, Fraser Franks, Dale Gorman, Tom Conlon, Chris Whelpdale, Alex Samuel and Jamie Gray are all released.

Boro have already begun planning for next season by signing Stockport County midfielder James Ball for an undisclosed five-figure fee.
