Former York City midfielder Elliott Whitehouse was the hero after scoring Lincoln City’s winner against Shrewsbury Town in the weekend Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley.
The Red Imps were making a first-ever visit to the national stadium having narrowly missed out last season when beaten by eventual winners York in the FA Trophy semi-final.
However, they soon went ahead against their higher-ranked opponents after Luke Waterfall’s effort was parried by Dean Henderson and Whitehouse swept in the rebound at close-range.
Wembley man-of-the-match Whitehouse, 24, made eighteen appearances for the Minstermen when on loan from Sheffield United back in season 2013-14.
Meanwhile, Shrewsbury’s line-up actually contained three more former City players in highly-rated youngster Ben Godfrey, currently on loan from Norwich City, Carlton Morris and second-half substitute Alex Rodman.
