York City midfielder Jonathan Smith is to complete a permanent £50,000 transfer to Luton Town early next week.

“It was a shame when he had to return to York because he was really beginning to hit form” – Paul Buckle

The 26-year-old enforcer has agreed terms running until the summer of 2014 with the Conference promotion-chasers and the move will be officially sealed on 1st January.

Smith scored on his last of six appearances during a recent loan spell with the Kenilworth Road club until being recalled early by York manager Gary Mills.

“It goes without saying that myself, the coaching staff and players, are thrilled to have Jonathan with us permanently,” Hatters boss Paul Buckle told Luton’s official website. “In the time he was with us he was fantastic, and it was a shame when he had to return to York because he was really beginning to hit form.”

Preston-born Smith managed only fourteen appearances since rejoining the Minstermen last summer following a successful year away at Swindon Town – whom he helped to the League Two crown last term.
