Keith Lowe headed a late equaliser to maintain York City’s long unbeaten league record in a 1-1 draw at Exeter City.

The Minstermen’s recent goalkeeping problems continued as David Wheeler headed the troubled Grecians into an early lead. But the dependable Lowe claimed his second goal in four games to reward the travelling faithful.

The visitors made three changes with goalkeeper Michael Ingham and centre-back Dave Winfield retaining their places having appeared as half-time substitutes during the latest draw with Cambridge United. Midfielder Tom Platt was also recalled – with winger Lindon Meikle swapping to the bench alongside midweek goalscorer Wes Fletcher following overnight illness.

Exeter forced a couple of early corners and recent signing Graham Cummins headed over from Matt Oakley’s delivery. And they were soon in credit with Wheeler heading another Oakley cross into an inviting goal – with reintroduced keeper Ingham seriously misjudging and left stranded. Femi Ilesanmi had only just been waved back onto the pitch having taken a knock.

York immediately broke through Platt but Anthony Straker could only find the side-netting after initially slipping. Ingham was then almost caught out at another free-kick situation as the visitors’ deeply uncertain start continued.

Grecians midfielder Liam Sercombe saw a deflected shot through to Ingham before their opponents forced their first corner around the half-hour. A second soon followed, delivered by Luke Summerfield and headed wide by Lowe.

A lovely passing more from the Minstermen witnessed Coulson brought down on the edge of the box. His free-kick was deflected behind and Straker proved wayward from the corner. The winger next crossed but Jake Hyde couldn’t get proper contact on the header.

York immediately threatened at the start of the second period with Hyde being denied by a last-ditch challenge. Summerfield then struck a free-kick wide before Meikle replaced Straker and Hyde swept comfortably off-target.

Goalkeeper Ingham made a couple of decent claims to boost his confidence while Summerfield’s corner was helped on by Russell Penn but Hyde couldn’t reach. The visitors made another change as Fletcher took over from Platt.

Fellow substitute Meikle then had a cross taken by young goalkeeper Christy Pym before a misplaced pass by Ilesanmi found Cummins too close to Ingham as Lowe challenged. Skipper Penn and Summerfield were wide in reply – the second of those deflected for a corner.

The Minsteremn made their third and final change with strapping youngster Ben Hirst replacing Hyde with just over ten minutes remaining. But it was Lowe again the threat and soon heading Summerfield’s corner onto the roof of the net.

And the equaliser finally arrived with another Summerfield corner being headed in at the far post by the ever-dangerous Lowe.

Scot Bennett replied from distance but was well over and Meikle blocked from Arron Davies, while Coulson delivered an inviting cross only just cleared in time at the other end.

Marvin McCoy’s injury-time free-kick was also scrambled aside by Pym, who then collected Lowe’s header from the resultant corner.
