Transfer-listed defender Marvin McCoy scored for the second consecutive game as York City once again held Championship opposition to a 1-1 draw at Bootham Crescent.

The Antigua & Barbuda international gave the hosts an interval advantage that was cancelled out late on by Sheffield Wednesday’s recent signing Lewis McGugan.

Minstermen newcomer Vadaine Oliver had an early attempt fended away by Lewis Price, who then saved low from skipper Russell Penn after a neat flick on from the Sheffield-born marksman.

Home keeper Scott Flinders was though required to react sharply as Marco Matias threatened when fellow recent arrival James Berrett badly underhit a back-pass.

But lively York still went ahead just beyond the half-hour, Josh Carson delivering low for McCoy to stab home his second goal in two games from close-range.

Ross Wallace soon crossed for Tom Lees to head over at the other end and next hoisted a free-kick much too high.

Replacement goalkeeper Michael Ingham saved comfortably from substitute McGugan following the break before Matias should have equalised when wide of the far post.

Midfielder Berrett’s reply was deflected behind from enterprising work by Anthony Straker, while substitute Callum Rzonca linked for Penn to pass up a good opportunity to shoot as the hosts made a number of changes.

And Wednesday took advantage with former Watford midfielder McGugan poking in an equaliser with nine minutes remaining after Ingham initially blocked following a slip from Dave Winfield.

York defender Keith Lowe then headed a stoppage-time chance narrowly over at the far post in another decent workout for the home side despite missing five key players.
