With a fortnight remaining until the start of their new campaign, York City went down 2-0 to Bolton Wanderers in their latest pre-season friendly at Bootham Crescent.

The League One side took an early hold on proceedings with Mark Davies drilling them in front after only three minutes, although their opponents should really have been level on the hour when Scott Fenwick’s penalty was saved by Mark Howard.

Freshly relegated from the Championship last term, the Lancashire outfit then made no mistake from the spot as they added a decisive second goal courtesy of Jamie Proctor with just five minutes remaining.

The Minstermen included an unnamed trialist goalkeeper who was soon picking the ball out of his net after Davies found the bottom corner from the edge of the box following Gary Madine’s knock-down.

Zac Clough narrowly missed the target moments later while goalscorer Davis saw a further attempt deflected behind before Fenwick was almost on the end of an Aidan Connolly cross towards the other end.

Winger Connolly then shot wide from Daniel Nti’s assist – and the visitors suffered a blow midway through the opening half when losing midfielder Clough to injury. He was later joined on the sidelines by Frazer Richardson.

City manager Jackie McNamara made no changes at the break and soon witnessed his trialist goalkeeper superbly denying a header from former Manchester United striker Max Clayton.

York should certainly have levelled on the hour when Connolly was brought down inside the area by Howard. But the keeper then fell to his left to meet Fenwick’s side-footed penalty.

The hosts responded with a number of changes – and a couple of their replacements, Yan Klukowski and Franklyn Clarke, both struck wide before Clayton was too high in return. Fenwick also drilled behind with substitute Reece Thompson attempting to apply the finishing touch

The visitors were awarded a penalty of their own with five minutes remaining after Matt Fry fouled Proctor – and the substitute duly wrong-footed Scott Flinders from twelve-yards to secure victory.
