York City are bidding to avoid a fourth successive pre-season defeat when hosting a Newcastle United XI in their final scheduled friendly at Bootham Crescent on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3.00pm).

Following a heavy loss to a powerful Middlesbrough outfit in their opening run-out three weeks ago, York then comprehensively defeated both Stalybridge Celtic and Blackburn Rovers Under-23s away without conceding a goal. However, they have since narrowly lost to Bolton Wanderers, Doncaster Rovers and Harrogate Town.

The Minstermen are without striker Richard Brodie having suffered a swollen foot and ankle during the opening half of the midweek defeat at Harrogate.

The 29-year-old also appears unlikely to feature in the season’s opening league game at Maidstone United in just eight days time, which could prompt an early return into the transfer market for manager Jackie McNamara.

Defender Jack Higgins similarly misses out due to a family commitment and groin strain collected in a tough encounter at the CNG Stadium.

Fellow newcomer Ben Barber (hamstring) and young midfielder Callum Rzonca (shoulder) are still to be involved since the squad returned to training earlier this month, while returning favourite Lanre Oyebanjo is another needing some important game-time.

United’s youngsters recently defeated their PSV Eindhoven counterparts 1-0 with a goal from former York loanee defender Kyle Cameron.

Supporters should be aware that both the Popular Stand and Grosvenor Road End will be closed for the game due to reduced attendances during pre-season.

Meanwhile, admission prices for other areas of the stadium are confirmed as £12.00 adults and £6.00 concessions.
