Spinning the clock back to York City’s last appearance in the FA Trophy second round, when a 6-2 victory at Salisbury City helped them on their way to a glorious winning day out at Wembley in May 2012.
The prolific Matty Blair added two more goals to his ever-growing tally as York City earned an emphatic first-ever victory against Salisbury City in the FA Trophy second round. Jamie Reed and Patrick McLaughlin were also on target for the visitors before the break with Jake Reid replying.
Latest signing Matthew Blinkhorn then increased their advantage after coming off the bench midway through the second-half before fellow substitute Moses Ashikodi conceded a late penalty and allowed Reid to claim his second goal of the contest. But there was still enough time remaining for McLaughlin to complete the scoring with a brilliant solo strike just before the end.
Salisbury were coming into the game on the back of reaching the FA Cup third round for the first time in their history when eventually losing 3-1 to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. But they suffered a couple of early blows with on loan goalkeeper Mark Scott ruled out and skipper Chris Giles injured during the warm-up.
The Minstermen soon took advantage and after McLaughlin forced an early save at the second attempt from goalkeeping coach Simon Arthur, they proceeded to score four times during a fifteen-minute spell midway through the opening half.
First a Danny Pilkington free-kick was not properly cleared on twenty minutes and skipper Chris Smith and then Scott Brown helped it back for Blair to force past the despairing efforts of Arthur at close-range.
Blair instantly added his twelfth goal of the season a couple of minutes later when lashing an instinctive right-footed shot inside the left-hand post after Pilkington laid off a Scott Kerr cross. The in-form goalscorer immediately marked it with an acrobatic somersault.
And there were further celebrations five minutes later as Reed chipped neatly over the keeper to make it 3-0 following a surging break by McLaughlin, who then swept a 23-yard free-kick beyond the wall and via the inside of the right-hand post after Pilkington was brought down on the edge of the area.
But just sixty seconds later York keeper Michael Ingham was required to deny Daniel Fitchett and after the visitors failed to clear through Daniel Parslow, the advancing Reid took maximum advantage and helped himself to a consolation.
The Minstermen made a much slower start to the second-half as their opponents battled well. Charlie Losasso had an early attempt deflected wide before Parslow cleared importantly from the same player, while Kerr had to charge down from Ben Adelsbury.
Manager Gary Mills introduced latest signing Blinkhorn on the hour and he soon had a dipping half-volley claimed by Arthur before adding a fifth goal within four minutes of his introduction.
Northern Ireland Under-21 international McLaughlin was again involved as he found Blair and his low cross from the right was tucked into the corner by Blinkhorn from around five-yards.
More good work from Blinkhorn almost released Blair for a hat-trick moments later before Ingham was forced into a great save falling low to his left from Daniel Webb’s header following a whipped 77th minute free-kick.
But just three minutes later York substitute Ashikodi needlessly tripped Fitchett just inside the area and Reid grabbed his second goal of the afternoon from the penalty spot.
However, York deservedly finished the contest with the final goal as McLaughlin brilliantly cut inside from the left-hand touchline and left opponents trailing before blasting in number six.
