Heading back to the final away game of the 2006-07 season and play-off chasing York City desperately needing a positive result at relegation-threatened Southport.

Leading goalscorer Clayton Donaldson calmly slotted in his twenty-fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot to give the high-flying visitors an absolutely crucial 1-0 triumph at Haig Avenue.

Directly in front of the vast bank of travelling supporters, Donaldson kept his nerve to calmly wrong-foot home keeper Terry Smith and simultaneously shatter Southport’s four-game winning run while virtually consigning them to relegation.

That immediately followed the impressive keeper already making a superb double-save to keep out both Craig Farrell and Steve Bowey, who then appeared set too convert at the third time of asking until dismissed right-back Michael Powell was adjudged to have handled on the line.

Fellow defender Mark Birch had previously glanced the crossbar on sixteen minutes, although his colleagues were largely kept in check by their higher-ranked opponents despite Carl Baker almost getting on the end of Sean Paterson’s injury-time cross.

York striker Farrell had already missed a couple of decent opportunities, while later supplying winger Martyn Woolford to produce a fierce drive fingertipped over by the diving Smith.

Midfield enforcer Neal Bishop then lifted too high following the interval before Donaldson finally sent the ball past the valiant Smith from twelve-yards just short of the hour.

His City counterpart Tom Evans was by contrast only routinely required to deal with attempts from Baker, Mark Duffy and Mark Boyd, while the dangerous Woolford dragged wide in reply and Donaldson also lashed across goal.
