The clock is turning back to the opening home league fixture of the 1978-79 season as York City and Portsmouth serve up an eight-goal spectacular at Bootham Crescent.
Fresh from beginning their fourth-tier campaign with a 2-1 success at Rochdale, the Minstermen, then under the leadership of Scottish boss Charlie Wright, crashed five goals in the same game for the first time in six-and-a-half years.
That had appeared highly unlikely as Pompey resembled a confident and useful outfit during the first-half of the contest.
Indeed the visitors were in front on twenty minutes, Jeff Hemmerman finding the net after a couple of blocked attempts, although former Celtic full-back Roy Kay was only denied an equaliser by the woodwork.
However, sixty seconds later excellent approach work involving David Loggie, Tony Young and Peter Stronach ended with goalkeeper Peter Mellor unable to deny Gordon Staniforth’s low drive.
Five minutes after the break the south coast club were back ahead when winger David Pullar allowed Hemmerman an angled strike after Kay had surrendered possession.
But York were to instantly fight back and within minutes Ian McDonald’s free-kick witnessed Staniforth’s shot blocked and veteran marksman Kevin Randall calmly slotting in the rebound.
Moments later Pompey’s Peter Ellis was sent-off for kicking Loggie and the hosts proceeded to score three more times in seven frantic minutes
First centre-back Steve Foster handled directly in front of the referee and Staniforth expertly converted the penalty.
And three minutes later Staniforth’s perfectly delivered corner was knocked back by centre-forward Loggie and Randall headed into the roof of the net.
But York weren’t done yet – and the same duration had elapsed when £20,000 summer capture from Burnley, Loggie, claimed the goal his performance had warranted with a fierce low drive following another McDonald free-kick.
Pompey at least managed late consolation as ex-Sunderland midfielder Stronach pulled back Steve Davey inside the area and Keith Viney slotted in the penalty.
