Turning the clock back to January 1995 for York City visiting the former Chester club, and eventually coming out on top in their third-tier clash while notably assisted by the current manager at the Deva Stadium, Jon McCarthy.

The Minstermen were actually recovering from a seriously indifferent start to their campaign and arrived with the boost of a 2-0 victory at Oxford United just five days earlier. Indeed their form at the turn of the year was to suddenly offer them renewed hope of end-of-season play-off involvement for a third successive season.

Struggling Chester included on loan Bradford City striker Neil Tolson, who was to join York eighteen months later in a permanent deal, in addition to midfielder Nick Richardson – another player later bound for Bootham Crescent.

But following a scoreless opening half in Cheshire, it was to take the visitors almost an hour to get in front when McCarthy weaved towards the edge of the area and slipped in fourteen-goal ace marksman Paul Barnes to decisively find the far corner.

And just seven minutes later teenage midfielder Scott Jordan spectacularly hoisted only his second league goal over advanced keeper David Felgate from thirty-yards to extend that advantage.

Then some absolutely calamitous defending between Chris Lightfoot and ex-Lincoln City keeper Felgate allowed McCarthy to walk in an easy third goal with only thirteen minutes remaining .

Dominant York went on to add another in the final minute of the game when substitute Paul Baker was initially thwarted by Felgate and Wayne Hall’s follow-up deflected in by Julian Alsford.

Alan Little’s side would next record victories against both Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle to make it four straight league triumphs – but were to unfortunately fall short of the play-offs come the end of the season.
