Rewinding back to the only other occasion that weekend opponents Braintree Town visited Bootham Crescent in October 2011.

York City eased themselves into the play-off zone with a scintillating attacking display and 6-2 victory against a completely overrun Braintree Town at Bootham Crescent.

Northern Ireland Under-21 international midfielder Patrick McLaughlin scored twice before the break to add to goals from Ashley Chambers and Jamal Fyfield. Sean Marks claimed a consolation for the visitors on the stroke of half-time.

Braintree further reduced the deficit through Aswad Thomas following the restart but leading goalscorer Jason Walker converted from the spot after Matty Blair was brought down inside the area by the dismissed David Stevens.

Substitute Adriano Moke then added a brilliant solo effort to make it six as the visitors finished with just nine men after their own replacement Andrew Yiadom was sent-off in added time.

Not for the first time this season the unchanged Minstermen inflicted most of the damage during a spectacular opening half display in which they scored four times, this time with a solitary reply. Chambers soon drove wide on six minutes before Marks headed over at the opposite end.

But it was Chambers with his fourth goal of the campaign opening their account on the quarter-hour with a clinical finish as he cut inside a challenge and struck into the far corner after accepting McLaughlin’s pass.

Two minutes later the lively Chambers’ cross was volleyed wide of the far post by Walker before McLaughlin’s corner was almost forced in by Blair as the hosts continued to totally dismantle their opponents with their attractive passing game.

Then after an excellent challenge from Jon Challinor to thwart Adam Bailey-Dennis at the home end, Chambers had a chipped attempt claimed underneath his crossbar by Nathan McDonald before James Meredith was only halted by vital covering from Stevens.

But a rampant York were not about to be kept out for much longer and a fabulous break from Meredith allowed McLaughlin to lash into the corner to deservedly increase their advantage just before the half-hour.

Goalscorer McLaughlin then saw another attempt deflected behind a couple of minutes later before the hosts added a third goal as defender Fyfield backheeled into the net after Blair helped back an overhit Chambers free-kick.

And midfielder McLaughlin soon claimed his second of the contest when flashing a left-footed shot inside the near post with four minutes remaining of a truly magnificent first-half display from his colleagues.

The visitors still snatched an unlikely consolation during a couple of minutes of added time when skipper Kenny Davis’ shot came back off an upright and Marks converted the rebound despite claims for offside.

The Minstermen were back on the attack following the interval with a whipped first-time cross by Chambers being headed over by Walker.

Braintree though almost reduced the deficit on the hour as Michael Ingham denied a header from Davis and Fyfield cleared off the line from the subsequent corner. But their second goal duly arrived two minutes later with Thomas sliding in a shot after an initial blocked attempt.

York soon restored the superiority their outstanding play warranted when Blair was brought down inside the area by Stevens, who was promptly dismissed and Walker comfortably registered his eleventh goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Further goals always appeared likely for the majestic hosts and Blair (twice) and Challinor each threatened before substitute Moke swept down the left and sealed a tremendous afternoon for the home faithful with a brilliant individual strike.

There was still enough time remaining for fellow replacement Jamie Reed and Blair to try and get themselves on the scoresheet before teenage substitute Yiadom was sent-off for a bad challenge on Chris Smith during four minutes of added time.
