York City have made just a single previous visit to Solihull Moors, but it was a highly significant one in December 2011 when taking a first step towards winning the FA Trophy.
Matty Blair struck twice for the visitors after recalled skipper Chris Smith had earlier opened their account in what proved a comfortable 3-0 success over the Blue Square North strugglers.
The former Kidderminster Harriers winger was denied by an early save from Moors keeper Jasbir Singh before emergency midfielder Smith claimed his first goal of the season when turning and volleying in Scott Kerr’s thirteenth-minute cross from the left.
The Minstermen continued to appear well in control with Michael Ingham easily gathering from weekend goalscorer Jordan Fitzpatrick before the interval.
However, a sudden partial floodlight failure actually delayed the start of the second-half, but after consultation with both managers the game was allowed to continue.
Advancing defender James Meredith was soon wide of the mark for the visitors following a break on the left by Patrick McLaughlin before Jason Walker glanced another opportunity over.
But York still extended their lead on the hour when McLaughlin’s diagonal pass sent Blair racing clear and the speedy forward easily slotted past keeper Singh.
Blair then added his second of the evening and sixth of the campaign with a tremendous volley into the roof of the net from Meredith’s 76th minute cross.
Meanwhile, substitute Danny Pilkington should really have had another just before the end when presented with the opportunity by Walker.
