Tamworth skipper and former York City defender Chris Smith is looking forward to his first return to Bootham Crescent this weekend.

The 28-year-old centre-back made over 80 appearances during a three-year spell with the Minstermen before departing six years ago, and is hopeful that his current club can upset his former employers.

“I’m looking forward to the York game from a personal point of view,” he told the Tamworth Herald.

“I have not been there since leaving, nor have I played against them.

“I missed our 3-2 defeat to them at The Lamb earlier in the season because of a foot injury and that was when I went in for a hernia operation anyway.”

He continued: “I was gutted about that, but hopefully I’ll get a chance to face them this weekend.”

The Derby-born stopper is available for selection again after serving a recent suspension and is clearly relishing a return to his former haunt.

“I enjoyed my three years at York, it was my one experience of playing in the Football League,” he added.

“They were mixed times on the pitch, because we got relegated and I was offered a deal, but then had it taken away from me.

“But in terms of the fans, I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them.

“I used to see them out and about in the city and they would always speak to me. I put everything into every game while I was there and I think the fans liked that about me.”
