Manager Martin Gray faced a dilemna with his three leading strikers, Jon Parkin, Louis Almond and Alex Kempster, ruled out for the visit of title-chasing neighbours Harrogate Town to Bootham Crescent.
He could of course turn to another couple of options in the experienced James Gray and on loan Raul Correia, although they had scored only a couple of goals between them.
Meanwhile, seventeen-year-old Flynn McNaughton boasted less than thirty minutes of senior action during the preceding draw with Chorley.
Gray made his decision and selected a couple of lightweight wingers in Aidan Connolly and Connor Smith to lead the line.
Possibly for the first ever time, York had named a starting-eleven for a game without a single recognised striker being included.
City lost 2-0.
What did the supporters make of it across the Twitter network?
I don't mind losing so much when I know we've given everything to win but I can't take that today. Putting out a side with no recognised forwards, at home is a disgrace. We put out a side designed to stop them rather than beat them. So, so angry and sad right now. #ycfc

Sums up what @YorkCityFC can do as far as I'm concerned. The #ycfc support deserves better on and off the pitch, and it's off the pitch where the rot is deepest, we will never rise until everyone associated with the current regime is bought off – unlikely as that is. Shambles. pic.twitter.com/e1aQexWijd

We may we'll be light up front but the two senior forwards we have on the bench is something of grays fault. As they're not going to do anything. Not to mention poor subs on Saturday taking two effective players off. Just all wrong #ycfc https://t.co/QwxyjM7qnQ

You can’t ask much more from #ycfc fans! Turn up in there numbers home&away. It’s up to the players now to show pride, passion and some guts that will get us promoted. Over to you now @YorkCityFC https://t.co/XsIblRFKHO

They were poor today. The fact is the squad has too many mediocre players. I accept that Parkin, Almond and Kempster missing leaves us short up front but too many just don’t look up to it or up for it. Moke grafted today though. #ycfc https://t.co/BE2WtTUXPz

@BBCYorkSport gray re strikers. "Fans need to remember transfer window closed & all ours injured, were having to play smith or a 17 year old kid?"did he forget about the 2 on the bench he signed who have turned out to be terrible?I'm glad transfer window closed!! #ycfc

i can take defeat, but i am absolutley disgusted by the display today. tactically deluded, little effort, poor performances all round. failure to reach the play offs is not good enough, but its a likely reality now. we are going to fester in this league. so sad to see #ycfc

I really do wonder what Gray sees at times, Connolly was abject but gets 90mins, Conor Smith looked lively & tried as did Heslop but yet they go off. Harrogate were never in any trouble there, what is happening at the club? #YCFC
