York City never recovered from having defender David McGurk sent-off inside the opening minute as they crashed to an embarrassing defeat at lowly Southport.

The former Darlington centre-back was dismissed for pushing Shaun Whalley inside the area only moments after the kick-off and Chris Lever easily struck home the penalty.

Ninety seconds later it got worse for the visitors when ex-Accrington Stanley winger Whalley, who only arrived on a free transfer this week, hooked in a second after the visitors failed to clear.

Midway through the first-half the contest was effectively over after York’s sixth-minute substitute Greg Young fouled John Kissock, whose free-kick was helped into the top corner by Kevin Lee.

And it could have become even worse for the Minstermen had returning goalkeeper Michael Ingham not denied former Stockport County striker Matty McNeil from six-yards.

At the other end home keeper Tony McMillan was required to make a couple of low saves from Peter Till and Chris Carruthers in a miserable opening half for the visitors.

That was to continue immediately after the break as York skipper Chris Smith failed to clear and McNeil crossed for Whalley to miskick. However, Ingham then failed to hold onto a long-range effort and Whalley followed in to claim his second goal of the afternoon.

Southport keeper McMillan made a scrambling save to keep out substitute Jamie Reed just beyond the hour and was again called into action by the former Bangor City striker ten minutes later.

But Young made a timely challenge to avoid conceding a fifth goal as the hosts, who had already used all their substitutes, also ended the game with ten men after Robert Marsh-Evans hobbled off following a challenge on Ashley Chambers.

York went close in added time when Till’s cross skimmed the crossbar but by then it was far too late.
