York City Futsal have given their hopes of avoiding relegation a massive boost following a weekend 3-1 victory at London Genesis.

Former Leeds Beckett player Tom Blackburn scored twice while Jamie Bettson was also on target as the visitors secured a first win in nine games while also completing a crucial league double.

“The first goal was a 1v1 down the side and I just made a cut into the middle,” Blackburn explained. “You’ve got to be there in the right moment, and it sort of came off my shin and went in.

“Similar with the second one. A bit 50/50 with the keeper – spilled it out. The ball just fell to me and luckily I had the composure with a little dink over the keeper.”

Fellow marksman Jamie Bettson, who claimed his fourth goal of the campaign, agreed their triumph was a huge boost going forward.

“I think it’s a really important victory for us,” he admitted. “We hadn’t won a game since November, so it’s been a long time.

“We’ve gone into every game knowing every point’s important in the situation we’ve been in. But we’ve put a space between us and the teams below us, so hopefully we can look forward in the league now.”

Manager Junior Roberti conceded it was a fixture that neither team could really afford to lose given their respective positions in the table.

“It was a game to win,” he said. “We knew that Genesis were in pretty much the same situation as us trying to avoid relegation.

“We both started the game knowing the winner would have more chance to escape relegation and the loser would be in a bad situation.

“We worked really hard and it was not an easy game. The team played well and we solved the problems together. In these situations we need the players to get together and fight together – and that’s what we did.”
