York City’s opening pre-season run-out ended in a heavy 6-0 defeat to Premier League Middlesbrough at Bootham Crescent.

The visitors were in front when Carlos de Pena’s 19th minute attempt came back from an upright and went in off unfortunate goalkeeper Scott Flinders.

David Nugent soon added another after initially being thwarted by Flinders before setting up Albert Adomah for a third goal prior to the interval.

Boro extended their advantage with more than an hour played as substitute Jordan Rhodes turned swiftly inside the area. Fellow replacement Adam Reach then chipped a fifth over York’s trialist goalkeeper Ed Wilczynski.

Home substitute Matty Dixon next crashed a 25-yard reply against the crossbar before Scotland international Rhodes forced in Reach’s low cross during the final moments.
