Ground consultant Gary Ventress remains delighted with the quality of the Bootham Crescent pitch.

While results haven’t always been the best this season, the Minstermen continue to receive the benefit of a really decent playing surface carefully overseen by the former Sunderland and Darlington head groundsman.

“They always say if you can keep a good grass cover on your pitch until Christmas time, then you’ve got a decent chance to continue that on when all the bad weather starts to hit us,” Ventress told York’s official YouTube channel. “So in that respect we’re delighted with the cover on it.

“In this day and age there’s different things you can do on pitches that you couldn’t do when I first started many, many years ago. Like we’ve just reseeded the pitch three-and-a-half weeks ago with a sort of winter grass.

“The secret is to keep at it and try and keep as much grass as you can for as long as you can, really,” he added.

“You need to have a massive pride, and obviously you look out on it and that’s your little forte and you work up to match days.”
