Chasing a fourth consecutive victory this weekend, York City’s players have been putting in the ‘hard yards’ under strength and conditioning coach Robbie Dawson.

The Minstermen host fellow promotion hopefuls Bradford Park Avenue tomorrow afternoon having twice accounted for bottom-of-the-table North Ferriby United over the festive period and then triumphed at manager Martin Gray’s former club Darlington.

And Dawson believes the crucial strength and conditioning work under his part-time leadership can give them a clear edge while searching for more valuable league points over the coming months.

“I think sports science now, when you see it in the Premier League, is so vital,” he told York’s official YouTube channel. “With special recovery, the injuries now, the pace of the game is well up there.

“You’ve just got to keep topping the lads up with their fitness, especially if they do pick up an injury as well. They lose a little bit of match fitness when they come back so it’s almost like trying to work around the injury at the same time.

“Ideally I would have liked to have come in at the start of the season, ” Dawson admitted. “But I’ve come in halfway through and seen where the lads were at. They are a bit new to some of my conditioning, so I gave them a baseline strength session and from there have progressed it each week.”
