David Ferguson believes Martin Gray is still the man to get York City promoted despite their hopes for this season now being virtually over.

The 23-year-old England ‘C’ international swiftly followed his former Darlington boss to Bootham Crescent in October – and has given his firm backing towards the under-pressure supremo.

The Minstermen  are currently on a four-game losing sequence in which they haven’t even managed a single goal, which has witnessed them sliding out of the already extended play-offs and increasingly towards mid-table.

Their latest debacle found City being on the end of a league double at part-timers FC United of Manchester – and more angry scenes involving their loyal followers at the final whistle.

“Every single player will be hurt seeing the fans’ expressions [of anger] towards the manager,” Ferguson told The Press. “But the manager picks eleven players and we’ve got to do better on the pitch. So it’s down to us and we’ve got to put better performances in.

“Others might see it different but I still think he is the right man and will get this club promotion,” he added. “And I know he will keep trying day in and day out, 24/7, to do everything he can for this club.”
