New signing Vinny Steels says it’s a dream come true to sign full-time for York City after rejecting Premier League advances only this week.

The sixteen-year-old winger has moved across from National League North rivals Darlington, where he already worked closely with current York boss Martin Gray while regularly training with their senior squad.

Prior to that the highly-rated prospect had spent time with both Sunderland and hometown club Hartlepool United.

“If it wasn’t for him [Gray], I wouldn’t have got the chance at Darlington,” Steels explained to York’s official YouTube channel. “Fantastic and the biggest influence in my career so far.

“To come full-time [to York] is a great opportunity. I couldn’t turn it down and I was just glad that Martin trusted me and wanted me to come to York.

“I had a chance to go on trial with a Premier League club this week but turned it down to come to York,” he revealed. “Because it’s a massive club and should be back in the Football League soon.

“It’s a dream really to get a full-time club – and hopefully I can get in the first-team.”
