York City assistant manager Dave Penney believes it was a case of a couple of well-matched teams following the 2-2 draw with Spennymoor Town at Bootham Crescent.

Both sides had gone into the contest on the back of successful runs having each won their previous five games.

However, York twice led through on loan Jonny Burn and Aidan Connolly, only to be pegged back on each occasion.

Nevertheless they remain fourth in the table and now five points behind second position ahead of next week’s visit to Stockport County.

“A good game of football, I thought, and two teams that were really having a go and trying to win the game,” Penney told BBC Radio York. “You can see we’re level in terms of league position.

“There were a couple of chances first-half, if they’re taken and we get a 2-0 lead, that might be a different game.

“We’re disappointed we’ve got in the lead twice and not managed to see the game out and get three points,” he admitted. “In general I thought we did okay today and with two decent teams.”

The Minstermen were rather disrupted when having to replace former skipper Simon Heslop at the interval due to injury, while defender Hamza Bencherif was also later withdrawn having sustained a knock.

“We’ve had to take Simon Heslop off and Hamza – and his [Bencherif’s] man actually scores the goal for the second one,” Penney continued.

“Simon’s [injury] is similar to what he did in the reserves at Grimsby – it’s a groin/hamstring pull. Perhaps it’s a little bit of fatigue as well. That was his first game back on Tuesday and ninety minutes on a heavy pitch.

“Hamza’s was more of a kick. He got it in the first-half, two or three kicks and he fell on it. He’s got cuts and bruises all over it but I wouldn’t imagine it’s anything long-term and he’ll be alright for Saturday.

“It’s important we keep this little run going,” he added. “Obviously we wanted to win and have six on the spin. But if you can’t win, come away with something.

“It’s that momentum we’re getting in terms of picking points up and moving up the league. People see it and it’s a feelgood factor around the city. People want to be associated with success and perhaps they feel something is building.

“It’s brilliant when they get 3,000 here and hopefully that can continue and we keep picking points up and more and more people start coming.”
