Manager Martin Gray was once again deeply frustrated following a 1-1 draw with lowly part-timers Alfreton Town at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen took an early hold through recently back-in-favour midfielder Simon Heslop, until yet more non-existent defending allowed former York centre-back Tom Allan an equaliser before the interval.

“Very frustrated and the fans go home frustrated as well,” Gray admitted to BBC Radio York. “We started the game great, nice and bright. Quick free-kick and Simon Heslop with a clear touch and finds the bottom corner.

“There was nothing in the game first-half, we were quite comfortable and didn’t look like we were going to concede. And just so disappointed in the manner that we did concede.

“I pride ourselves on the work we do and about all having individual people to mark – the names and numbers,” he continued. “And it’s then about taking responsibility and we didn’t do that well enough for once in the game – and we got caught out.

“Hamza’s [Bencherif] lost his man and his man’s scored. When he goes into that box I can’t say ‘this is your man now, remember I’ve told you that before’. If you don’t do your job right you get punished – and Hamza didn’t do his job right.

“You can’t blame coaches, you can’t blame managers. I’m not throwing players under the bus but it’s about taking responsibility. I have to take responsibility for decisions I make and if I make mistakes, I hold my hand up – which he did.

“At the end of the day, I think it’s important that there is no blame culture here. We are all in this together. I lead from the top and if I’ve done wrong, I’ll hold my hand up.”
