York City’s assistant manager Dave Penney said it’s just important to keep getting victories following a 5-3 thriller at AFC Telford United.

The Minstermen are now fourth in the table after skipper Sean Newton scored twice alongside newcomer Raul Correia, Adriano Moke and Jonny Burn.

That makes it five successive wins for the visitors and moves them within six points of second-place ahead of a forthcoming trio of vital clashes with Spennymoor Town, Stockport County and leaders Salford City.

“It’s a fifth win on the trot and five goals away from home and a decent performance,” Penney told BBC Radio York. “It was a big game for us in terms of points and we got three, so now we move on to Spennymoor on Saturday.

“We’re always looking to score goals and got a great start with two quick goals, which settled us down,” he admitted. “Obviously delighted to win 5-3. It’s nice to share around the goals, we’ve been asking for that and got it today.”

The contest notably witnessed prolific chief marksman Jon Parkin unable to locate the back of the net for the first time in six games. He was actually withdrawn at the break.

“We didn’t really want to take him off but the pitch was heavy,” Penney revealed. “There’s a few there that’s got a few strains and we took him off as a precaution mainly. He’s got a bit of a strain so we took him off.

“Hopefully he’ll be okay, we just iced it. And the same with [Adriano] Moke. He felt a little bit tight so we took him off an iced it.

“In that position when you are that many up you can do it, but it still showed how much we need and missed them. We took them off mainly as a precaution so touch wood they’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Penney actually reckoned his charges became rather sloppy as their opponents pulled a couple of goals back during the later stages having trailed 5-1 just after the break.

“They’ve made three subs at half-time and just gone for it second-half,” he added. “They’ve changed their shape and it was a bit difficult to deal with at times.

“But we should see that game out 5-1, 5-2, 6-1, 6-2, whichever. It could have gone either way and ended 7-1 or 8-1.

“I think it got easy and we got a little bit sloppy in the second-half, but fair play to them they had a really good go at us.”
