The two pre-season title-favourites clashed in the FA Cup second qualifying round at the weekend – and York City triumphed 2-1 at Salford City courtesy of Jon Parkin’s double.

The Ammies took the lead just prior to the interval when two players were given the freedom of the penalty area from Richie Allen’s free-kick, with recalled skipper Liam Hogan heading in.

But tenacious work from Alex Whittle nine minutes into the second-half allowed Louis Almond’s excellent cross to be swept in by Parkin at close-range for his two-hundredth senior career goal.

And with five minutes remaining, Amari Morgan-Smith’s effort struck Parkin and deflected past Max Crocombe, whose side were denied three times by the woodwork after the break.
