York City went out of the FA Cup at the earliest stage of the competition in almost a century at Evo-Stick North leaders South Shields at the weekend.

Shields were ahead inside ten minutes when goalkeeper Jon Worsnop lost control of the ball inside his area and pulled down Jamie Holmes – with Carl Finnigan decisive from the penalty spot.

Veteran home skipper Julio Arca was then allowed to advance after exchanging passes with Robert Briggs and add a second goal for the eighth-tier part-timers before the interval was even reached.

It took until fourteen minutes from time for skipper Sean Newton to finally drive a right-footed reply through keeper Jack Norton, who moments later dropped a routine Amari Morgan-Smith cross and presented the opportunity for Jon Parkin to equalise.

But York were to disastrously concede again in added time when Gavin Cogdon headed in from close-range following Arca’s injury-time corner being knocked back at the far post.
