Manager Martin Gray hopes latest recruit Gary Martin can provide both quality and vital goals for York City over the next couple of months.

The 27-year-old former Middlesbrough striker will stay at Bootham Crescent until Christmas before then taking up an already-signed contract with top-flight Norwegian club Lillestrom SK. He brings with him both Champions League and Europa League experience.

“He’s a goalscorer with a pedigree from a very high standard,” Gray told BBC Radio York. “He’s been playing in the Belgian Championship, which is a very high standard. He’s here on a short-term deal and hopefully will give us the goals we’re looking for.

“His work-rate is fantastic,” he continued. “His energy and brain. When people see him at his best in 2-3 games time and he gets up to speed. His intelligence as a footballer; you can see why he’s played at the level he’s played at. I wish it [the deal] was longer but he’s with us till Christmas.”

Meanwhile, French-born defender Hamza Bencherif comes straight back into the team facing Curzon Ashton this weekend having recovered from the knock that kept him out last time.

“He’s fully fit,” Gray confirmed. “That was a big blow to us. It was on Friday morning that he pulled up and we changed the formation and personnel. We had to play Sean Newton at centre-half, which is not what we wanted to do. So he comes straight back into the team.”

However, the immediate outlook wasn’t as positive for striker Louis Almond, who suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder during the 3-2 home loss to Tamworth.

“We’re just waiting on some feedback from specialists regarding where he is,” Gray revealed. “I think he is going to be more long-term than short-term.”

Reserve goalkeeper Luke Simpson is another current casualty having missed the second-string’s midweek game against Port Vale, while midfielder Clovis Kamdjo isn’t expected back until the end of the year.

Otherwise, recent signing David Ferguson is suspended for the weekend following his dismissal last time out.
