York City assistant manager Dave Penney said it was a case of missed chances after a first defeat in seven matches at Stockport County.

As a result, York drop a couple of places in the table to sixth ahead of their visit to Tamworth’s artificial 3G playing surface next weekend.

“Certainly the result was disappointing,” Penney told BBC Radio York. “They had two, maybe three chances – and their keeper gets man-of-the-match.

“When we did eventually beat him they cleared it off the line,” he continued. “Usually we are clinical and score goals but today we weren’t quite at it and didn’t manage to put one away.

“Second-half the manager changed it and went three at the back. We had to go a little bit more direct because, as you can see, the pitch is awful.

“But it just wasn’t going in for us. Jon’s [Parkin] had a free-kick deflected, the keeper’s going the wrong way and it hits him on the chest and drops down – and because it’s boggy doesn’t come out to our lad.

“I lost count of how many chances we had. When Jon did beat him with a header the kid’s bicycle kicked it off the line – and it comes out to [Connor] Brown and the keeper’s tipped it out of the top corner. So it looked like one of those days when we weren’t going to score.”

The Hatters had struck twice prior to the interval through one-time City target Darren Stephenson and recalled Matthew Warburton – the second following a bad mistake from goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

“First one was a breakaway from when we were attacking, but they’ve got in too easy,” Penney admitted. “And then Adam’s disappointed it’s squirmed under him with no bounce off the pitch – it was awful in that penalty box.

“But on another day we get a goal and we go and get three or four to be honest, if we’d have scored early in the second-half.”
