Connor Smith is steadily getting accustomed to a new right-back role having once again filled the position during the reserves’ 2-1 defeat at Bradford City.

The 21-year-old was originally brought to the club as a winger when recruited by former manager Gary Mills last summer after earlier being with Hartlepool United.

But he’s since managed just a couple of starts while also finding himself despatched out on loan to Whitby Town despite regularly appearing lively.

“It’s something I’ve always seemed to do when numbers have been short in that position and I’ve been asked to do a job there,” Smith told The Press. “Now, I seem to be doing it a bit more, but I don’t mind.

“With full-backs these days, it’s a lot more about attacking and getting forward,” he added. “They need that in their game and attacking from deep is what I like to do – it’s when I play my best football.”
