Delighted manager Nigel Worthington praised the determination of his York City side as they guaranteed themselves a place in the play-offs with a third successive 1-0 victory against Newport County.

“We’ve really forged ahead and stuck to our guns and we’ve got in there through determination and energy” – Nigel Worthington

Michael Coulson scored the only goal as the hosts moved up to sixth in the table and claimed a forthcoming play-off semi-final in only their second campaign since returning to the Football League.

The Minstermen have one final game remaining at title-hopefuls Scunthorpe United next weekend but now can’t be caught by nearest challengers Oxford United following their 2-1 home defeat to Accrington Stanley.

“The run we’re on at the moment is magnificent effort by the players and the staff,” Worthington told BBC Radio York. “We fully deserve to be in the play-offs, I think that’s the first thing. We’ve not crept in the back door.

“It doesn’t matter what way you get in we’ve really forged ahead and stuck to our guns and we’ve got in there through determination and energy,” he added. “There are two big games to come home and away and at the moment as it stands we’ve got a one in four chance of getting through, so that’s the nice side of it.”
