York City have their first win of the season following a 1-0 success against Macclesfield Town at Bootham Crescent.

Recent signing Matt Fry was initially credited with the only goal of the contest just before the hour-mark of a hard-fought victory, although it was later given as an own-goal from former City defender John McCombe.

Manager Jackie McNamara earlier named an unchanged starting eleven from the weekend with Daniel Nti replacing fellow winger Kaine Felix on the bench.

Yan Klukowski had an early free-kick into the defensive wall after a foul on Aidan Connolly. Former Forest Green Rovers midfielder Klukowski’s resultant corner then witnessed Jack Higgins’ header appearing to be handled on the line.

Danny Rowe shot wide in reply while Connolly’s drive was deflected behind for another corner at the other end. Ex-Morecambe striker Jack Sampson soon headed a Mitch Hancox cross straight at Scott Flinders and Rowe proved wayward on the turn before also forcing the keeper to block.

Flinders safely gathered an early second-half free-kick from the visitors and next collected a decidedly tame attempt from the lively Rowe. Sampson also headed wide before Clovis Kamdjo’s reply was blocked to further shouts for handball.

Big defender McCombe was in turn booked for a foul on Connolly, and from the little Scot’s 57th minute free-kick, Hancox’s attempted clearance struck the former York man and was diverted into the net.

Home striker Scott Fenwick immediately found himself cautioned for following through on goalkeeper Craig Ross before Nti replaced Klukowski. He soon blazed well over with a speculative effort.

However, Macclesfield almost equalised when McCombe stole in and pushed wide of the far post from substitute Ryan James’ cross, while Andy Halls received a yellow card for following through on Alex Whittle. Defender Fry volleyed wide from the subsequent free-kick and Nti later had another effort deflected behind.

The Silkmen suddenly broke after Nti struck a free-kick into the defensive wall, but Flinders scrambled behind from Jack Mackreth ahead of an extended six minutes of added time.

York skipper Simon Heslop’s fierce drive then forced a decent save from Ross after the diminutive Connolly had chased forward, while Rowe sliced wide at the other end.
