York City are finally off the bottom of the table but failed to get the necessary victory against relegation rivals Maidstone United following a very nervy 1-1 draw at Bootham Crescent.

Recalled striker Jon Parkin gave them the perfect start with a third-minute opener, but they proceeded to spurn a number of opportunities and Reece Prestedge equalised straight after the break as the visitors went on to dominate.

The Minstermen surely recognised this as a must-win encounter and immediately went in front when Parkin converted Sean Newton’s cross into the near post.

However, Stuart Lewis headed over after Kyle Letheren parried from on loan Joe Pigott before York skipper Simon Heslop replied marginally too high.

Maidstone goalkeeper Lee Worgan next blocked from Heslop and in turn gathered Parkin’s attempted follow-up. The big striker also knocked wide Alex Whittle’s inviting delivery at the far post before Vadaine Oliver put the ball in the net while being adjudged offside.

Amari Morgan-Smith soon had an opportunity to claim his fourth goal in five games but struck wide, and Parkin also volleyed against the outside of an upright from Simon Lappin’s delivery. The experienced Scottish midfielder then fired too close to Worgan from distance.

Oliver saw an early second-half effort saved as the hosts attacked towards their favoured end, although it was Prestedge suddenly driving into the corner from 25-yards to equalise as the visitors instantly broke in the opposite direction.

Lappin curled a free-kick just wide after Nathan Ofori-Twumasi was cautioned for bringing down Newton, before Hamza Bencherif followed him into the referee’s notebook due to fouling interval substitute and long-throw expert Alex Flisher.

Fit-again Lanre Oyebanjo replaced Lappin following a knock – his first appearance since October, while Morgan-Smith went down inside the area before Letheren had to turn aside a header from Kevin Lokko, who also nodded over from a corner.

Skipper Heslop had a shot deflected behind following good work from Oyebanjo, while Parkin drove straight at Worgan before Prestedge was booked for simulation when challenged inside the area by Letheren – that after the Welsh keeper had initially blocked.

Back-in-favour Oliver next proved wayward from inside the area and keeper Worgan also hurriedly snatched at his feet. Substitute Bobby-Joe Taylor then struck wide at the other end as the visitors pushed strongly with a succession of corners in added time.
