They might still have three league fixtures remaining, but York City’s sorry fate would appear signed, sealed and finally delivered after once again falling woefully short in yet another of their self-proclaimed ‘must-win’ encounters.
The latest shocking 1-0 defeat to part-time hosts Gainsborough Trinity, who played for over an hour with just ten-men but still look destined for relegation, maintained an alarming recent slump that has witnessed the Minstermen scraping just a solitary point from their last available twelve.
That has in turn witnessed them sliding outside of the play-offs for the first time since the turn of the year, with realistically now as low as fifth position already out of reach, and the two clubs occupying the remaining couple of places still holding significant games in hand.
Therefore, unless there is a similarly dramatic collapse from elsewhere, that would seem to be it for a York side that has already let their valiant supporters down on so many separate occasions this seasons. Given that fact alone, perhaps it’s as well they have been spared any further heartache of a play-off lottery, and can instead begin with the inquests and recriminations that are sure to stretch long and deep into a summer of yet more edge-of-the-seat uncertainty.
So, how did the fans react across social media after the latest instalment of a truly disastrous season?
Fans View:
I’m ashamed to be a fan of @YorkCityFC and that hurts so much to say. Those players do not deserve to wear the shirt. #ycfc https://t.co/XAnV8DVD6e

Sadly it does feel as though storm clouds are gathering over Bootham Cresent. With due respect, losing to 10 man, part time Gainsborough Trinity has to be the lowest point in my time watching York City (1971-). Where did the pride and passion go? #ycfc #nationalleaguenorth pic.twitter.com/M3Hyj4vJTI

Lost one nil to second bottom despite playing against ten men for most of the game. That's as #ycfc as away days come.

Martin Gray and all his hangers on need to have the decency to leave @YorkCityFC now! Another truly awful and embarrassing day in this history of this football club #ycfc

How he has a nerve to even blame the fans for that today. His desperation today sounds like he's lost the plot. How Gray was even on the bench as well today is a laugh too. Where was Mcnaughton? Furious #ycfc

In the distance, one of Englands dreaming spires. In the foreground, City fans, suffering another nightmare. Once again the loyalty of the fans is betrayed. #ycfc pic.twitter.com/bsXRivVJ7Z

How can a football club be this bad? #ycfc
— Matty (@matty_ycfc) April 14, 2018
@BBCYorkSport Two players returning from injury are injured again. A substitute who hasn't even tied his bootlaces. Losing to 10 part time footballers who are already pretty much relegated. Is this what professional football is about? #ycfc

“Things cannot get any worse” does not apply to York City FC. Week after week they prove new lows are possible. #ycfc

Sack them all tonight @YorkCityFC play youth team for remaining 3 fixtures. You’ll get more fight, passion and skill! #ycfc

worst york city team ever. get out gray, sack the squad. 60 mins against the 2nd worst team in the league with 10 men and didnt challenge the keeper once. embarrasing. #ycfc

Let rip into them & give em what for, they deserve it. Another great following from the City fans & all we ask for is 100% effort & graft. #YCFC

How does football do this to us?? I feel sick #ycfc I really do wish I could turn it off and not care @YorkCityFC
— James Green (@JamesGreen300) April 14, 2018
If I was Grey & Penney and I’ll let every #ycfc fan at Gainsborough Trinity go into changing rooms and rip into these “professional full-time footballers” this is absolutely horrific. They don’t care! #Embarrassing

Total clear out required at #ycfc from top to bottom. I’d only keep hold of Steels and McNaughton. What a total embarrassment. #playtheyouthteam

I think it's time to turn the life support machine off and just call it a day. #ycfc
