York City manager Gary Mills has told five out-of-contract players they can leave the club.

Defender Liam Darville, midfielders Levi Mackin, Chris Carruthers and Neil Barrett, and striker Leon Constantine have each been advised they won’t be retained.

Young right-back Darville only arrived at the club in January after being released by Leeds United, while the far more experienced trio of Mackin, Carruthers and Barrett failed to really establish themselves last term after struggling with injuries. All three featured in York’s play-off final defeat to Oxford United at Wembley last year.

Veteran striker Constantine was brought in by former boss Martin Foyle following the departure of top scorer Richard Brodie in August and scored eight times in 27 appearances.
