York City have signed former Shrewsbury Town centre-back David Winfield on a two-year deal.

“He has a wealth of experience to add to what we’ve got” – Nigel Worthington

The 26-year-old 6’3″ defender becomes the sixth new arrival at Bootham Crescent since the end of last season.

Aldershot-born Winfield began his career with his hometown club, making over a century of appearances and helping them to the Conference Premier title in 2008 whilst a team-mate of fellow new recruit Anthony Straker.

He joined Wycombe Wanderers in July 2010 and completed a similar number of appearances there alongside another City newcomer Marvin McCoy before moving to Shrewsbury, where he has since been limited to only eighteen games until his release at the end of last season.

“David is another experienced centre half to add to the three that we’ve already got,” manager Nigel Worthington told York’s official website. “Again, he’s played a lot of his football in League One so he’s had a wealth of games and has a wealth of experience to add to what we’ve got. He will also add competition for places and that’s what we’re all about.”
