Big-spending Crawley Town started with a 1-0 defeat to newcomers Grimsby Town at the Broadfield Stadium. Lee Peacock scored the winner after debutant home keeper Michel Kuipers had been sent-off.

Fellow new boys Darlington also won 1-0 courtesy of Liam Hatch’s early strike against Newport County at the Darlington Arena.

Matthew Barners-Homer snatched a late winner for title favourites Luton Town in a 2-1 home victory against Altrincham. Zdenek Kroca had earlier scored on his Hatters debut before Damian Reeves headed an equaliser.

Tamworth sit top of the table after a 4-2 win over Eastbourne Borough at the Lamb Ground. Kyle Perry, Tom Marshall, Danny Thomas and Alex Rodman netted for the hosts with Richard Pacquette and Gary Elphick replying.

Mansfield Town were 3-1 victors over Forest Green Rovers at Field Mill, where debutant Paul Connor scored twice and Gary Mills was also on target. Gavin Gaines had earlier headed an equaliser for the visitors.

Rushden & Diamonds shared a 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town at Nene Park, but needed a last-minute equaliser from Michael Corcoran after Magno Vieira had volleyed the visitors in front.

Hayes & Yeading narrowly defeated Bath City 2-1 with striker Ben Wright netting twice on his debut and Gethin Jones claiming a late consolation for the newcomers.

Christian Jolley scored the winner as AFC Wimbledon started out with a 1-0 success over Southport at Haig Avenue.

Andy Morrell celebrated his return to Wrexham with the only goal as Cambridge United were beaten 1-0 at the Racecourse Ground.

Zac Attwood scored twice as Histon came from behind to defeat Barrow 3-1 at the Glassworld Stadium. Romone McCrae was also on the mark after a Remy Clerima own goal handed the visitors an early advantage.

Gateshead and Kettering Town remained scoreless in a bad tempered clash at the International Stadium.
