Ex-York City goalkeeper David Stockdale has hit out at his former club, who released him from Bootham Crescent four years ago.

The 24-year-old was then handed a lifeline by Darlington before earning a dream move to Premier League Fulham just over two years ago.

And such has been his recent form that he is even been talked of as a future member of Fabio Capello’s England squad, which would appear a far cry from when then York boss Billy McEwan sent him out for loan spells at Wakefield & Emley and Worksop Town.

“They told me I was money-grabbing,” Stockdale told The Guardian about his departure from the Minstermen. “I was on £175 a week and I asked for £200 because I was travelling and wanted expenses.

“They said I should concentrate more on my football,” he added. “They lost out. I’ve got friends at the club and I wish them well but there were a few people there at that time that looked past potential and at money.”

Stockdale made 26 appearances for York and was also capped by England at non-league level whilst there.
