York City chairman Jason McGill really believes new manager Nigel Worthington can help the club rise through the leagues.

But first the former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United left-back must begin to steer the Minstermen away from immediate relegation danger, starting at bottom club AFC Wimbledon this weekend.
McGill was particularly impressed by Worthington’s achievement of guiding Leicester City away from relegation from the Championship six years ago. Prior to that the 51-year-old masterminded Norwich City’s rise into the Premier League while he has also led Northern Ireland in 40 international games.
“I want Nigel to help us move up the divisions because we are ambitious,” McGill told The Press. “I am ambitious in my business life outside of football and we are an ambitious board. We want York City to thrive – that’s our aim.
“He knows people in the game and that will help in terms of player recruitment,” he continued. “We will be making sufficient funds available to assist him in that respect, as we have done with all our previous managers.
“His coaching ability cannot be questioned either. He has his UEFA Pro licence and has managed in the Premier League and at international level, so he comes with all that experience.”
