York City face old rivals Doncaster Rovers for the second time in three seasons in the Capital One Cup later this evening. Almost two years to the day the Minstermen narrowly lost on penalties to their hosts in what was their first competitive fixture since famously defeating Luton Town in the play-off final at Wembley in May 2012. Doncaster had been at that particular time a full three divisions higher than their opponents. Now that gap has closed considerably, although League One Rovers should arrive in great heart following an excellent 3-0 victory at fellow-relegated side Yeovil Town on the opening day of the new campaign.
“We had them watched on Saturday, they’re big and strong and Nigel [Worthington] has done well with them,” Doncaste boss Paul Dickov told Rovers’ official website. “They had a fantastic end to the season and they got a good point in a decent performance against Tranmere on Saturday and we know it’s going to be really tough.”
York are again without strike duo Wes Fletcher and Jake Hyde while winger Josh Carson remains a longer-term casualty. Midfielder Luke Summerfield is however pressing for a start having come off the bench at the weekend. Fellow debutant Ben Hirst, 17, should again be involved with numbers still decidedly short in attack.
York City (possible): Mooney, McCoy, Lowe, McCombe, Ilesanmi, Meikle, Penn, Platt, Straker, Coulson, Jarvis
subs: Ingham, Parslow, Winfield, Montrose, Summerfield, Murray, Hirst
Scored a great goal when the two clubs met in the same competition a couple of years ago.
Doncaster may rest defenders Reece Wabara and Rob Jones while Nathan Tyson and Harry Forrester are both struggling with knocks. Otherwise, on loan Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer is eligible and Jamie McCombe has resumed full training.
Long-serving midfielder who recently signed a new two-year deal.
Doncaster have visited York on 34 occasions in all competitions and boast a very decent record, both winning and drawing eleven times against twelve defeats.
