York City’s summer signing Jonathan Smith says that only maximum points against Rushden & Diamonds this weekend can make up for the recent defeat to Fleetwood Town.

One victory from six games is hardly the kind of start expected at Bootham Crescent this season, and the 23-year-old former Forest Green Rovers midfielder reckons that only a win will do following another poor show from his side at the Highbury Stadium earlier this week.

“It has got to be. It has to be three points,” he told The Press. “I am obviously disappointed. I thought I worked hard but, at the end of the day, if I am in the team I want to win games.

“To be honest, Fleetwood looked a lot sharper than us and I don`t know why that was,” he continued. “We are all disappointed and the gaffer has let us know. He has told us it isn`t good enough and we all know.

“We are all working hard in training. The gaffer wants us to play a certain way and we were trying to put that into play but, before Monday, we thought we had been making progress and doing well.”
