York City defender Connor Brown says he feels “embarrassed” following an absolutely shambolic team display at Curzon Ashton.

Having determinedly fought past league leaders Salford City just a week earlier, the Minstermen produced a shameful performance while collapsing 4-1 to modest part-timers that continue to battle against relegation.

It left hundreds of travelling supporters totally stunned as to how their on-the-field favourites could produce such deeply contrasting efforts over the space of just a few days.

“We’ve got to take it on the chin, it’s our fault,” Brown admitted to BBC Radio York. “It was the same players that started last week against Salford, so I don’t get what the difference is.

“It’s mentality because they’re not in front of loads of fans,” he admitted. “No disrespect to Curzon Ashton, but we’re a big team in this league. They should be coming nowhere near us. To come off that pitch 4-1, I’m embarrassed.

“The gaffer [Martin Gray] has come in and had a go at us but it’s not his fault. We’re professional footballers and how we can turn up on a Saturday and accept that. And then go home and look at yourself in the mirror and think ‘I’ve done alright today’.

“Most of us in that dressing room can’t say that because you’d be lying to yourself. And if you lie to yourself, you’re not going to go nowhere.

“We’re in for training [on Sunday] and it’s the right thing to do,” Brown agreed. “You can’t expect to get away with that. We need a reaction because I don’t think that was acceptable.

“They wanted it more than us, you could tell that on the pitch. But it shouldn’t be like that, we’re professional footballers.”
