Substitute James Gray was the unlikely hero with a vital injury-time winner against Southport at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen had earlier surged into a two-goal advantage through recent arrival Alex Kempster and Aidan Connolly’s sixth of the season.

But already deprived of sidelined leading marksman Jon Parkin, a trio of injuries to fellow attacking players checked their progress; Jason Gilchrist subsequently replying despite goalkeeper Adam Bartlett initially saving his 78th minute penalty.

Elliot Osborne then lashed in a superb equaliser for the visitors inside the closing five minutes – only for Gray’s first-ever senior City goal to send their supporters into late, late rapture.
