York City manager Martin Foyle described his team’s efforts as ‘outstanding’ following their glorious 1-0 victory at favourites Luton Town in their play-off semi-final second-leg.

Chris Carruthers’ goal two minutes after the break capped a superb display from the visitors, whose 2-0 aggregate triumph confirmed a Wembley appearance against his former club Oxford United in just under two weeks time.

“We were outstanding,” Foyle told BBC Sport afterwards. “The good thing is when we did get the goal we changed around straight away and went 4-5-1 and they did exactly what I wanted them to do on the training pitch.”

However, the game ended in uproar after York’s delighted players were forced onto the terraces to escape missile-throwing Luton supporters.

“I can’t comment on that, hopefully the authorities will deal with it, it’s nothing to do with me,” Foyle added. “I was just worried about my players’ safety. Fair play to the stewards, there wasn’t many of them but they did the job and got them out through the police room.

“Richard Brodie got smacked on the head with a coin but it might wake him up. But other than that we’re okay,” he joked.

“But it was quite scary, I haven’t seen that for a long time in football.”
